Dr Usman Maqsood is a consultant respiratory physician in Birmingham with over 19 years of experience in general and respiratory medicine. He qualified MBBS from the University of Health Sciences, Lahore in 2003, gained MRCP (UK) in 2012 and was awarded FRCP in 2020. He earned his CCT in general and respiratory medicine in 2018 .

He holds NHS consultant posts at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust and works privately at Midlands Health and The Harborne Hospital in Edgbaston 7. His roles include educational lead and senior academy teacher in respiratory medicine at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, examiner for the Royal College of Physicians, GMC and PLAB, and GMC associate assessing CESR applications .

His clinical expertise covers chronic cough, breathlessness, asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, interstitial lung disease, sleep apnoea, lung cancer, pleural disease and related respiratory infections. He is highly proficient in procedures including bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), focused thoracic ultrasound, diagnostic and therapeutic pleural aspiration, indwelling pleural catheter insertion, intercostal chest drains, overnight oximetry, spirometry, CPAP initiation and CT lung assessment .

He is actively involved in research and has authored several papers and case reports on COPD treatment, EBUS for PD?L1 testing in lung cancer, spontaneous pneumothorax management, haemotympanum after EBUS?TBNA, plasmacytoma diagnosis, airway ‘traffic jam’, ECMO in near?fatal asthma, fibronolytic drainage, virtual respiratory clinics, and burnout among respiratory physicians.

Outside of medicine, he enjoys playing golf and badminton and speaks fluent English, Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu
