Prof. Wasim Hanif is a distinguished Professor of Diabetes & Endocrinology and Consultant Physician, currently serving as the Clinical Director in diabetes at University Hospital Birmingham. He also provides private consultations at The Priory Hospital, The Harborne Hospital, and The Edgbaston Hospital. Prof. Hanif completed his specialised training, including an MD from the University of Birmingham, in Birmingham. He has been a Consultant Physician in Diabetes & Endocrinology at University Hospital Birmingham and was appointed as an Honorary Professor in Medicine in 2013.
Prof. Hanif is actively involved in various national bodies, holding significant positions such as Trustee at Diabetes UK, Member of NICE HTA and MHRA, and Chair of Diabetes SAHF. He is globally recognised for his expertise, offering counsel to the UK Government, European Parliament, and Commonwealth Ministers. He has chaired guideline development groups for the International Diabetes Federation and other prominent organisations.
His areas of expertise include Diabetes, Obesity, and Ethnic Health. He collaborates with national bodies and professional groups across the UK. Prof. Hanif's research interests encompass diabetic kidney disease, diabetes prevention, management during Ramadan, obesity, ethnicity, and addressing health inequalities. He has played crucial roles in international multi-centre trials, including the establishment of UKADS.
At the parliamentary level, Prof. Hanif advises the government on diabetes and ethnic health issues. He chairs the Diabetes Working Group of the South Asian Heart Foundation (SAHF) and contributes to the Parliamentary and Stakeholder Diabetes Think Tank. Additionally, he serves on the Board of Directors for Apnee Sehat, a UK-based social enterprise focused on innovative healthcare delivery.
Prof. Hanif has authored numerous publications, toolkits, and guides on ethnic health. Notably, his 2009 report on research gaps among South Asians with diabetes in the UK was launched at the Houses of Parliament. His involvement with NICE includes advisory roles on various committees, such as Health Technology Appraisals, and providing expertise on issues like obesity definitions, diabetes prevention, and new treatments.
