Mr Wissam Abou-Chedid is a Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, internationally recognised for his expertise in robotic-assisted prostate cancer surgery and minimally invasive treatments for benign prostate disease.
He completed his medical degree at the University of Saint Joseph, Beirut, before completing his specialist urology training at Henry Mondor University Hospital, Paris. He further refined his expertise through advanced fellowships in minimally invasive and robotic surgery at Clinique Saint Augustin, Bordeaux, and at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust in Guildford.
Mr Abou-Chedid is among the highest-volume robotic prostate surgeons in the UK, having performed over 750 robotic procedures in the past four years. He is particularly known for his expertise in Retzius-sparing nerve-sparing robotic prostatectomy, a highly specialised technique designed to optimise continence and erectile function, and he is one of the highest-volume surgeons in Europe performing this procedure.
He is widely recognised for driving innovation in prostate cancer care, including pioneering day-case robotic prostatectomy and implementing patient-directed catheter removal protocols, both aimed at enhancing recovery and improving patient experience. He also championed the acquisition and implementation of the Histolog® device, a breakthrough technology enabling real-time intraoperative margin assessment, helping to improve oncological precision during prostate cancer surgery.
In addition to prostate cancer surgery, Mr Abou-Chedid offers a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art treatments for benign prostatic enlargement (BPH), including Aquablation®, Echolaser™, and Rezum™, ensuring patients have access to the most advanced and least invasive treatment options available.
Mr Abou-Chedid is also a dedicated educator and surgical trainer. He is a Robotic and Minimally Invasive Urological Surgery Trainer at IRCAD, and regularly hosts international workshops and masterclasses where urologists visit to observe and learn advanced robotic prostatectomy techniques.
He is committed to improving prostate health outcomes at a national level and serves as a Prostate Cancer UK National Clinical Champion, while actively supporting The Prostate Project charity, promoting awareness, early detection, and patient-centred innovation in prostate cancer care.

Frequently asked questions
Why did you decide to become a Consultant Urological Surgeon ?
My decision to specialise in urology was a very personal one. My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and seeing first-hand the anxiety, uncertainty, and impact this had on him and our family strongly influenced my career choice. It made me determined to focus on prostate disease and to provide patients with clear information, compassionate care, and access to the best possible treatments. Alongside my NHS work, I practise privately so I can offer patients timely access to care, continuity with the same surgeon throughout their journey, and the most advanced minimally invasive treatments available. Private practice also allows me to spend more time with patients and personalise their treatment.
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
Many of my patients are referred because of concerns related to prostate cancer, such as a raised PSA, an abnormal prostate MRI, or a biopsy-proven diagnosis of prostate cancer. I also see a large number of men with symptoms related to benign enlargement of the prostate. These include a weak urinary stream, difficulty starting or stopping urine flow, increased urinary frequency (particularly at night), urgency, dribbling, and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. Other common reasons for consultation include blood in the urine or semen, recurrent urinary tract infections, urinary retention, erectile dysfunction, and complications following previous prostate treatments.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
I offer a comprehensive, personalised range of modern treatments tailored to each patient’s condition, anatomy, and priorities. For prostate cancer, this includes robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, with a strong emphasis on nerve-preserving and Retzius-sparing techniques to optimise continence and sexual function. For benign prostate enlargement, I provide the full spectrum of treatments, including medical therapy and advanced minimally invasive options such as Aquablation, Rez?m, Echolaser, and robotic simple prostatectomy. I also offer transperineal prostate biopsies, advanced diagnostic pathways, and structured post-operative rehabilitation programmes to support recovery of urinary control and erectile function.
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
My main sub-specialist interest is prostate disease, particularly prostate cancer and benign prostate enlargement. I have extensive expertise in robotic prostate surgery and am especially known for high-volume Retzius-sparing robotic prostatectomy, a technique designed to improve early continence and functional outcomes. I am also deeply involved in minimally invasive treatments for benign prostate enlargement, day-case and enhanced recovery surgical pathways, surgical innovation, and outcomes-focused research. In parallel, I am actively engaged in teaching, proctoring, and international collaboration to advance prostate care and surgical standards.
