Dr Elspeth Payne is an esteemed Associate Professor of Haematology at UCL Cancer Institute and an Honorary Consultant Haematologist at University College London Hospital. She earned her medical degree from the University of Glasgow in 1997, complemented by an intercalated BSc in Psychology from University College London. Dr Payne's extensive training in Clinical Medicine took place in Glasgow and Oxford, followed by haematology training in London. She completed her PhD at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, in 2011, focusing on Diamond-Blackfan Anaemia and myelodysplastic syndrome.
Since 2012, Dr Payne has been leading the NHS Clinical service for MDS and Bone Marrow Failure at UCLH. She also heads the National Cancer Research Institute for MDS, where she has pioneered national multidisciplinary special interest groups in early detection, clonal haematopoiesis, and VEXAS syndrome. Her primary clinical interests include MDS, Bone Marrow Failure, particularly Diamond-Blackfan Anaemia and neutropenias, and AML. Additionally, she provides care for patients with general haematology concerns.
Dr Payne's dedication to her field is evident in her leadership roles and her commitment to advancing research and clinical practices in haematology. Her expertise and compassionate care make her a highly respected figure in the medical community.
