Frequently asked questions
Why did you decide to become a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine ?
I developed an interest in respiratory medicine through working closely with patients with a wide range of lung conditions and learning from experienced clinicians in this field. Over time, my interests focused on airway disease and lung cancer, which now form a major part of my practice. I practise privately to support patients with complex conditions and to offer more timely access to assessment and treatment, particularly where NHS waiting times may delay care.
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
The most common symptoms include breathlessness, either at rest or on exertion, wheezing, and cough, which may be productive or non-productive. Some patients also present with some of these as night-time symptoms. These symptoms often prompt referral for specialist respiratory assessment.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
Investigations commonly include blood tests, lung function testing, and more advanced assessments such as bronchial challenge testing, airway inflammation, exercise testing, and sleep studies. Additionally, where appropriate, I am apt in interventional procedures including bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, and advanced diagnostic techniques such as robotic bronchoscopy. These investigations help ensure accurate diagnosis and guide personalised treatment plans.
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
My sub-specialist interests include airway disease, such as asthma and smoking-related lung conditions including COPD. I also have a strong interest in the diagnosis and management of lung cancer, including coordinating referrals to surgeons and oncologists, exploring alternative treatment options when surgery is not suitable, and the provision of long-term surveillance and follow-up for patients.
