Dr Joel Mawdsley is a Consultant Gastroenterologist based in the internationally respected Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, where he serves as joint clinical lead. He studied pre-clinical medicine at Queens' College, Cambridge, earning a first-class honours degree in medical studies and winning the prestigious Max Bull Prize for medicine.
Dr Mawdsley has a wealth of experience in luminal gastroenterology, endoscopy, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He was previously an Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College and a Consultant at West Middlesex University Hospital, where he was the training lead for endoscopy.
From 2005 to 2007, Dr Mawdsley was a clinical research fellow at the Royal London Hospital, where he completed a Doctorate of Medicine focusing on the role of stress and psychoneuroimmunology in IBD. His research has led to several high-impact publications, and he continues to be actively involved in clinical research studies, particularly those exploring the brain-gut axis.
In the mid-2010s, Dr Mawdsley contributed to the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme as a colonoscopist for three years. His areas of expertise include luminal gastroenterology, endoscopy, and IBD, and he is highly skilled in diagnosing and treating a range of gastrointestinal conditions.
Dr Mawdsley was appointed to his current role at Guy's and St Thomas' where he continues to provide exceptional care to his patients while advancing the field of gastroenterology through his ongoing research and clinical leadership.
