Dr MacCarthy completed his undergraduate training at the University of Bristol, gaining a First Class Honours BSc in 1988 and MBChB with Honours in 1991. His general medical and cardiological training was in Oxford and then at the University Hospital of Wales. In 1996 he was awarded an MRC Clinical Training Fellowship to enable his research into endothelial function and was awarded a PhD by the University Hospital of Wales in 2000. He went on to train in coronary intervention at King's College Hospital and attained a BHF Advanced Training Scholarship and a Wellcome Trust Travel Award to fund an International Interventional Fellowship at the OLV Cardiac Centre in Aalst, Belgium.
In 2003 he was appointed as Consultant Cardiologist at King's College Hospital and Hon. Senior Lecturer in Cardiology at King's College London School of Medicine. He was responsible for the development of the primary angioplasty service at King's and is the lead cardiologist in the very successful trans-catheter aortic valve (TAVI) programme. He has served as an international Proctor for TAVI and taught 13 UK Teaching Hospitals the technique.
In 2007, Dr MacCarthy was appointed Clinical Lead in Cardiology at King's College Hospital and in 2012 Clinical Director of Cardiovascular Services at King's. In 2010 he became the Cardiology representative on the Medical Advisory Committee of the London Bridge Hospital. He is the current Secretary of the British Heart Valve Society.
