About Dr Richard Carroll
GMC number: 3333288
Year qualified: 1990
Place of primary qualification: University of Sheffield
Dr Richard Carroll graduated from Sheffield University Medical School in 1990, where he was awarded the Gold Medal in Clinical Medicine and Clinical Surgery and the Prize Medal in Paediatrics. Thereafter, he studied post graduate general medicine on the regional rotation around the Merseyside teaching hospitals where he quickly gained MRCP. He was then appointed as Cardiology registrar in the West Midlands Deanery, where he continued his training.
In 1997, Dr Carroll took a three year sabbatical to complete his PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of London. His research interest was the role of the mitochondria in reperfusion injury of the Human Myocardium. He returned to complete his sub-specialist training in interventional cardiology at the University of Birmingham and was appointed as Consultant Cardiology at Northwest London Hospital and St Mary's Hospital, Paddington in the summer of 2003.
Dr Carroll extended his training to ensure dual accreditation in both General Internal Medicine and Cardiology, making him unusual in this respect. This unique expertise ensures he is able see the whole spectrum of emergency medicine illnesses, not just from the perspective of that of the interventional cardiology. His current research is focused on the molecular mechanisms of myocardial injury and its prevention, newer imaging modalities in the assessment and management of myocardial infarction and the optimization of the management of Ischaemic Heart Disease.
