Practising full time in the private sector having recently retired as Consultant Breast Surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and IOW NHS Primary Care Trust, Mr Richard Sainsbury has extensive experience of managing both benign and malignant breast disease. His interests include sentinel node biopsy, reconstruction and augmentations (enlargements), mastopexy and reductions.
Mr Sainsbury qualified in medicine in 1976 and trained in Newcastle Upon Tyne. He became a Consultant in 1988 and, in his first post, he developed the breast team at the only district hospital that was site specialised. He moved to University College London in 2000 and headed the breast team until 2007 when he relocated to Southampton University Hospitals.
Mr Sainsbury has retained his ongoing research programme concerning the mechanisms of breast cancer. He is also actively involved in advising government bodies on the optimisation of breast services. He has written several books and many scientific papers on breast cancer.
