Miss Claire Fitzgerald is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Barth Health NHS Trust where she is an integral part of the orthopaedic team delivering elective and trauma care across the trust since 2015. She has a specialist interest in upper limb surgery and a particular interest in conditions affecting the shoulder, including both open and arthroscopic techniques.
Miss Fitzgerald graduated in 2003 from the University of Wales, College of Medicine. She completed her early surgical and orthopaedic training in the University Hospital of Wales and the Welsh Orthopaedic Training Rotation, before relocating to London to join the University College Hospital London Orthopaedic Training Rotation. She trained in all aspects of arthroscopic and open shoulder and upper limb surgery during her 20 months of subspecialty shoulder and upper limb fellowship training in University College Hospital London, and Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital London.
Miss Fitzgerald was awarded a Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Education from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow. She lectures on a number of training courses, including those for the FRCS Trauma and Orthopaedics. She is a qualified Advanced Trauma and Life Support Instructor and regularly instructs and examines for this globally recognized qualification. She has a continued interest in clinical research and has co-published in several peer-reviewed journals. She played a key role in the setting up of an NIHR clinical randomized controlled trial.
Miss Fitzgerald believes in and practices evidence-based care in both open and arthroscopic surgery, and achieves excellent surgical outcomes.
