    About Miss Homa Arshad

    GMC number: 4673042

    Year qualified: 1999

Place of primary qualification: University of Cambridge

Miss Homa Arshad is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal London Hospital where she also serves as Head of Orthopaedic Trauma. She specialises in hip and knee surgery and pelvic and acetabular trauma. She has a keen interest in all trauma and maintains a busy elective practice in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. She carries out complex hip and knee replacement surgery and accepts referrals from surgeons around the region. The majority of her work is for revision hip surgery where hip replacements have developed problems which she needs to address.

Miss Arshad graduated from Cambridge University and then trained on the Percivall Pott Rotation. She worked on translational research methods in New York and California. Her elective year was spent investigating operative emergencies in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. Back to the UK, she spent time in Norfolk as a trainee and was appointed the senior revision hip fellow, working with John Nolan, a former president of the British Hip Society. She then gained and completed fellowships in Germany with Professor Michael Raschke, Head of AO, the world’s largest global trauma and orthopedic community, and in Denmark with Kjeld Sobelle who pioneered minimally invasive periacetabular osteotomy. Her year as the pelvic and acetabular fellow at Barts Health working alongside the likes of Paul Culpan and Peter Bates allowed her to further hone her skills in acetabular reconstruction for arthroplasty as well as trauma.

Miss Arhad’s first substantive consultant post was at Newcastle Hospitals in 2015 where she spent nearly a year and represented her Trust at the Northern Trauma Network before moving to London. She also worked in Hastings and Norwich briefly as a locum consultant. She is an ATLS instructor and teaches as faculty for AO. She recently returned to Newcastle as course convenor for the annual Cadaveric Advanced Techniques in Lower Limb Trauma course.

Miss Arshad enjoys sailing and dancing, and is passionate about human rights.

    Frequently asked questions

  • What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?

I often see patients with discomfort or movement problems around the hip or knee. Sometimes there are a few different issues, which can turn out to be related. Some-times it is a single problem. The spectrum of patients I can help includes people who have suffered a severe, sudden problem and some who have been putting up with symptoms for far too long! I am always happy to see patients with complex problems as well, sometimes it emerges that we need also the expertise of colleagues in other spe-cialties.
