Professor Keyoumars Ashkan, a distinguished neurosurgeon at King’s College Hospital, London, was awarded an MBE in the 2025 New Year’s Honours List for services to neurosurgery. This prestigious recognition highlights his exceptional contributions to the field and his unwavering dedication to advancing patient care and medical innovation.
He is one of the few neurosurgeons in the UK to be awarded a Professorship. Professor Ashkan completed dual postgraduate training in medicine and surgery, earning Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1997 and the Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Glasgow in 1998. He received higher specialist training in general neurosurgery in London and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Neurosurgery in 2002. His subspecialist training in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery included a Fellowship in France, leading to an MD degree in 2006.
Appointed as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at King’s College Hospital in January 2007, Professor Ashkan was later promoted to Professor. His expertise spans degenerative spine disease, neuromodulation surgery, and brain tumours. He specialises in deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, and occipital nerve stimulation for movement disorders, pain, and headaches. He is also proficient in image-guided minimally invasive and stereotactic surgery for brain tumours, including awake craniotomies and brain mapping. Additionally, he is trained in Gamma and Cyberknife radiosurgery.
Professor Ashkan holds several key roles, including UK Lead for the Genomics England programme for brain tumours, President of the British Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, and Chairman of the Neurosurgery Section of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society. He is also King’s Lead for Neuro-Oncology and Chair of King’s Neuroscience Clinical Trial Unit. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the piano, having completed a degree and diploma in music.
