Year qualified: 1993
Place of primary qualification: Royal College of Surgeons of England
Professor Long Jiao is a distinguished Professor of Surgery, Chair, and Consultant in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at Hammersmith Hospital, part of Imperial College Healthcare. He also serves as the Lead for Robotic Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at the Royal Marsden Hospital. Professor Jiao offers private consultations at several esteemed locations, including the Princess Grace and Wellington Hospitals.
In addition to his clinical roles, Professor Jiao is an academic Professor at Imperial College and the Royal Marsden. He oversees specialist training in general surgery across Northwest London as the Training Programme Director and serves as an intercollegiate examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh (FRCS).
Professor Jiao's research is at the forefront of medical science, focusing on Micro RNAs, circulating tumour cells (CTCs), and liver regeneration. He was the first to describe CTCs residing in organs local to pancreatic or colon cancers and identified three mRNAs to differentiate benign from premalignant pancreatic cystic tumours, aiding in the early detection of cancer.
A pioneer in his field, Professor Jiao established the first robotic HPB (Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic) programme in the UK. He is renowned for performing a wide range of innovative surgical methods, including the largest number of laparoscopic and robotic liver and pancreatic resections. Notably, he performed the first robotic Whipple Procedure in the UK. In liver surgery, he introduced radiofrequency-assisted liver partition with portal vein ligation for staged liver resection, significantly increasing the number of patients eligible for liver surgery by inducing liver hypertrophy preoperatively to avoid liver failure.
Professor Jiao continues to contribute significantly to both clinical practice and medical research, ensuring the highest standards of care and innovation in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.
