Listed in the Tatler Doctors Guide as one of Britain's "250 best consultants", Mr Satya Bhattacharya has been a Consultant Surgeon at Royal London and St Bartholomew's Hospitals, London, since 1999. His special interests are liver surgery, pancreatic surgery, gallstone and biliary surgery, and hernia surgery. He is also an expert in radiofrequency ablation and chemo-embolisation for liver tumours. He does private practice at the London Clinic, the Princess Grace Hospital and the King Edward VII Hospital. He is the Clinical Lead for the multi-disciplinary team for liver and pancreas cancer (HPB MDT) in North-East London. He is also the Medical Director of the London Clinic and Serjeant Surgeon to the Royal Household.
Mr Bhattacharya qualified in medicine with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from Grant Medical College, Mumbai in 1984, followed by a Master of Surgery in 1988. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1992. He followed this up with an MPhil from London in 1995 and intercollegiate FRCS in 1998.
Mr Bhattacharya is a former member of the Court of Examiners, Royal College of Surgeons of England and an adviser (referee) for the NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme. He is an author of chapters in six multi-author medical textbooks and of over 50 peer-reviewed papers in medical journals (including Nature Clinical Practice, Hepatology, British Journal of Surgery and British Journal of Cancer). He has raised over £500,000 for research into pancreatic and liver disease. This fund has been used to run several research projects at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
