    Mr Steven Millington is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust. He is head of the department at the Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre which is the dedicated regional elective orthopaedic surgery centre for the north east Thames region. He also works at the Royal London Hospital, the largest trauma centre in Europe, and Newham University Hospital as the clinical lead for the trauma and orthopaedic department. He specialises in hip and knee replacement, arthroscopic knee surgery, musculoskeletal tumour surgery and general orthopaedic trauma.

    Mr Millington graduated in medicine from the University of Nottingham in 1998, having earlier attained a Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) from the University of Nottingham in 1996. He undertook his PhD in articular cartilage research working at the University of Virginia, USA, Technical University of Graz, Austria and the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. His PhD was awarded by the University of Nottingham in 2008. He worked as a trauma surgeon at the Medical University of Vienna for some time before returning to the UK to complete training on the Royal London Hospital program. He then undertook prestigious specialist fellowships in joint reconstruction and tumour surgery at globally renowned centres in Melbourne, Sydney and Vienna before returning to the Royal London Hospital. He trained at St Bartholomew’s and Royal London teaching hospital and was appointed as a consultant at Barts Health in 2014.

    Mr Millington was the lead orthopaedic surgeon in a path-breaking documentary series, Operation Live, on Channel 5. He performed total knee replacement surgery live on TV, broadcast to an audience of more than 1.5 million viewers. His strong, empathic understanding of the needs of injured sportspeople comes from his experience as a competitive rugby player at elite level. Aside from English, he speaks fluent German.
