Dr Cath Spencer-Smith graduated from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, in 1995. She then went on to train in her specialism of Sport and Exercise Medicine at Bath University, and is a now a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine. She has been a Consultant Sports Physician at the 2012 Olympic Games, the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and many GB teams.
Cath works with an extensive variety of patients with differing abilities, ranging from Olympians, through to patients under-going treatment for, and recovering from, serious illness and cancer. Physical activity is vitally important for cancer patients at all stages along their journey and there is overwhelming evidence relating to the benefits that it brings in terms of the reduction in cancer recurrence and mortality, as well as improving fatigue and psychological health.
Cath specialises in guiding even the most sedentary patients in the best ways to benefit from exercise during and after cancer treatment, in a safe and personalised manner. Cath’s approach is holistic and functionally focused, helping patients to get back to doing what’s important to them. She works closely with those involved, to help patients rehabilitate and gain new resilience.
