About Miss Moneli Golara
GMC number: 3544660
Year qualified: 1991
Place of primary qualification: University of London
Miss Moneli Golara works as an Obstetrics & Gynaecology Consultant at Barnet General Hospital in North London. Her main areas of interest are menstrual problems, keyhole surgery and other general gynaecological problems. She is one of the few consultants in the unit who regularly performs laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery on women for most conditions.
Having qualified in medicine from University College Hospital in 1991, Miss Golara completed her training in hospitals across London, working in many centres of excellence such as Queen Charlotte’s, Guy’s and St. Thomas’s and Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals. She gained Membership of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) in 1997, and fellowship (FRCOG) in 2010.
Miss Golara has recently contributed as an expert to a comprehensive pregnancy book 'My Pregnancy', published by Dorling Kindersley in 2011. During her training she also undertook two years in clinical research, mainly in conditions such as pre-eclampsia and prematurity, publishing many peer-reviewed articles in relevant journals.
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
I see a lot of patients of different age groups. The most common symptoms that they tend to present with is menstrual irregularities, either heavy or erratic or irregular periods. I also tend to see quite a lot of women around the menopause for advice about hormone replacement therapy and menopause.
I do also tend to see a lot of younger women between the ages of 18 and 25 who are a bit embarrassed to discuss their gynaecological issues with their GP because they may be male. So, I do tend to see a lot of that age group. They often have contraceptive needs and other issues that may affect their gynaecological health.
Can you tell us a bit more about the treatments that you can offer your patients?
The gynaecology treatments are divided into medical and surgical. From a medical point of view, I offer things like contraception and hormone replacement therapy to resolve hormonal issues that women might experience or medical treatment for heavy periods.
From a surgical point of view, I have dealt with many patients who have fibroids and who wanted to avoid a hysterectomy and/or women who have prolapsed ovarian cysts who need surgical management. I often undertake quite a lot of surgery in that sense.
Can you please tell us a bit more about your areas of subspecialist interest?
I'm generally a generalist gynaecologist, but if I were to choose any area of subspecialty, it would have to be the management of menstrual irregularity, either medicine or surgery. The areas I specialised in during my training were mainly obstetrics oriented, but I don't undertake private obstetrics.
From a gynaecological point of view, I'm generally a generalist. I don't particularly have a subspecialty interest in gynaecology. I work generally as a generalist.
