  • About Mrs Nitu Bajekal

    GMC number: 4393456

    Year qualified: 1987

Place of primary qualification: University of Madras

Mrs Nitu Bajekal is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Barnet Hospital in North London since 2001. Her primary gynaecological interests are minimal access surgery (keyhole surgery) and cervical cancer screening. She has a special interest in ectopic pregnancy, polycystic ovarian syndrome and recurrent miscarriage. She is also actively involved in high risk obstetrics and is the Lead for HIV in pregnancy and women with female genital mutilation (FGM), as well as teenage pregnancies in Barnet Hospital.

Mrs Bajekal’s initial training as a medical student was in the prestigious medical school, JIPMER, Pondicherry, in India. She completed her postgraduate studies, with research in fetal medicine in obstetrics and gynaecology, at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences between the years 1987 and 1991. She came to the UK for higher training in 1992.

Over the last twenty years in obstetrics and gynaecology, Mrs Bajekal has developed and maintained a keen interest in medical education. In India, she helped set up a Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) recognised Part 2 MRCOG course in India (in Pune) in early 2005. This course now runs efficiently with organisers and consultants in India and she lectures on this course once a year. As an invited speaker, she lectures to gynaecologists in India every year on a variety of topics. She is also an invited speaker with Conference Plus and has lectured to General Practitioners (GPs) all over the world on gynaecological topics.

Between 2002 and 2008, Mrs Bajekal was the Royal College Tutor responsible for training junior doctors. In 2007, she was also appointed as the Training Programme Director for ST1/2 trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. In 2007, she also organised and set up a centralised teaching programme for ST1/2 in North London (10 hospitals). It has proven so successful that a centralised programme has been rolled out to all levels of trainees from 2009.

In recent years, Mrs Bajekal has become an MRCOG examiner and RCOG college representative at interviews for consultant appointments. She teaches on several MRCOG revision courses and is an MBBS examiner. She has recently started blogging for the Huffington Post, seeking to dispel common myths in women’s health. She is also a co-founder of women for women’s health (WfWH), an exciting new service promoting women’s health through healthy living.
