    GMC number: 2924313

    Year qualified: 1984

Place of primary qualification: University of London

Professor Nicholas Peters is a British Heart Foundation (BHF)-funded general cardiologist, with special interest in heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias), and their treatment with invasive procedures (ablations) and device implantation. His work forms the basis of the clinical component of the program of research into myocardial conduction ranging from sub-cellular morphological determinants of cell-cell coupling to conduction properties of human myocardium in health and disease.

Professor Peters serves as a Consultant Cardiologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (St Mary's Hospital), and as a Professor of Cardiology and Head of Cardiac Electrophysiology at Imperial College London. He is accredited in both cardiology and general medicine. He also works as Adjunct Professor, Department of Pharmacology, Columbia University, New York and as Co-Director EP Research at St Joseph's Cardiovascular Research Institute, Atlanta. He is on the Board of Trustees of The Founding Research Committee and acts as the Board Liaison for Research of Heart Rhythm Society, USA. He is also the director of the ElectroCardioMaths Programme.

After graduating from London University in 1984, Professor Peters pursued his scientific and clinical training in London. He was awarded MRCP in 1987. He then trained in general medicine in several London teaching hospitals, and in cardiology at The National Heart Hospital, Royal Brompton Hospital and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at the Hammersmith Hospital, before being appointed to St. Mary’s Hospital. His MD at Imperial College, London was funded by a three-year BHF Research Fellowship in 1991-94. In 1992-93, he undertook post-doctoral research at Columbia University, where he continues to hold a faculty position today.

Professor Peters has more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and holds patents in the field of electrical and mechanical functions of the heart, and the causes and treatment of heart rhythm disturbances. He has an extensive molecule-to-bedside research programme, funded primarily by BHF. He is on the steering committee for major international clinical trials in these evolving fields. He is part of many international research collaborations, serves as a member of many scientific and medical advisory boards and is consultant to a number of academic, publishing and commercial entities in Europe and the USA. He is also a co-founder of the European Cardiac Arrhythmia Society and Symphony Medical, Inc.
