About Mr Alexander Loh
Mr Loh was appointed as Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon in September 1997 working at Barnet Hospital. He qualified from Charing Cross Hospital in 1992 and undertook his specialist training in the South East Thames Region as part of the St. George’s rotation. This also included a year in Adelaide in the hepatobiliary and vascular units.
He also has an honorary contract with Royal Free Hospital covering major vascular emergencies for the North Central London sector when on call. He is an Honorary Consultant at the RNOH in Stanmore, supporting the surgeons in tumour and spinal work.
As a Consultant at Barnet Hospital, and was the lead and mentor for his colleagues in laparoscopic hernia repairs. He has performed over 300 cases with a recurrence rate of less than 3%. and is the only surgeon in the trust offering thoracoscopic symphatectomy.
Mr Loh performed the first EVAR for aortic aneurysm in the trust and since then the unit has treated over 100 patients with no mortality. He introduced a new and modern treatment for varicose veins and venous disease (radiofrequency ablation) and has performed this successfully on over 400 patients with no significant side effects. Most of these patients were elderly and had longstanding ulcers. Treatment with RFA can be done under local anaesthetic which is ideal for these patients and most of these are now ulcer-free.
Mr Loh organised the first Barnet Hernia Symposium last year and the Advanced Ultrasound course for the modern management of varicose veins this year. He is also a tutor on this course at the Royal College of Surgeons. He is committed to teaching and is on the faculty for the Basic Surgical Skills and Advanced Surgical Skills courses, both held yearly at Barnet Hospital. He also lectures at Whipps Cross' FRCS course and the RNOH on vascular injuries and the diabetic foot.
