Frequently asked questions
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
I commonly see huge numbers of ankle sprains, bunions and heel pain including plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendon problems. However, because I run an international research programme, I also get a lot of patients sent to me for second, third and sometimes tenth opinions! My research areas are stem cells for the ankle and ankle arthritis and because I perform one the highest number of ankle replacements in the UK, I get a lot of patients seeking me out for an opinion.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
We have access to the latest and most state of the art diagnostics. Our service is supported by a 24/7 telephone number (020 3981 2192) to make us completely accessible and we run regular MDTs to ensure the highest quality of care. The commonest investigation we perform is a 3T MRI, which has significantly better quality images to the 1.5T MRI scanners available in most hospitals. We also have one of the only Standing CT scanning units in the country, which allows us to see 3-dimensional images of both feet with the patient standing in a functional position. We can even scan them in their shoes in certain circumstances such as "my foot only hurts in high heels”. The radiation dose is extremely low and equivalent to a trip to New York in an aeroplane. In terms of treatments my practice is at the forefront of the latest advances in foot and ankle surgery which is a rapidly evolving specialty. We use 3D EOS scanning to look at the whole patient, including posture and previous surgery and leg length inequality. We also use computer generated personalised instrumentation and minimally invasive techniques where appropriate to make sure we obtain the best outcomes for our patients
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
I run a national study comparing ankle fusion to ankle replacement in ankle arthritis which was funded by the NHS and has finished recruiting over 300 patients and is due to report shortly. I also have run the only MHRA approved formally funded stem cells trial comparing the effects of stem cells on tendon disorders. I frequently publish new innovations and new ways of performing foot and ankle surgery, advancing some of the stayed treatments like bunion surgery which hadn’t previously changed much in 30 years. As patients are ageing and yet becoming more and more active, we want to get our patients up and running as quickly as possible.
